機嫌を取る

Humoring means doing or saying something to keep someone pleased, calm, or satisfied, even if you do not fully agree with them. It is often used when dealing patiently with someone's ideas, wishes, or moods. The word can suggest kindness, but sometimes it also suggests not taking the person seriously.

Do not think only of `humor` as jokes. In this verb, it helps to think of someone's mood, and `humor someone` means going along with them to keep things calm. `I'm just humoring him` is a useful memory phrase: you are not fully agreeing, just playing along.

humoring は humor + -ing で、humor はラテン語 humor「体液・湿り」が語源。古代医学で体液が気質を左右すると考えられたため、「相手の気分に合わせる」という意味がここに残った。関連語は humid と humidity。
Humoring comes from humor with the ending -ing. Humor goes back to Latin humor, meaning "moisture" or "body fluid." In ancient medicine, a person's fluids were thought to shape their mood and character, so the word later developed the sense of fitting yourself to someone's mood; compare humid and humidity.
