Illinois entered English through French explorers’ spelling of the name of the Indigenous Illinois Confederation, also known as the Illiniwek. The name ultimately reflects an Algonquian expression associated with speaking in an ordinary or proper manner. French spelling supplied the final s, which is not pronounced in the English state name. The modern word is a proper noun referring to the U.S. state and is conventionally capitalized.
