fashionはラテン語factio（作ること）からフランス語façonを経て英語に入った。fac-は「作る」の語根で、factory（工場）やfabricate（製造する）と同根。「作られた型＝流行の型」が原義で、in fashionは「その型の中にいる＝流行に乗っている」という意味になる。
