「indirectly」は in-「〜でない」+ direct「まっすぐな」+ 副詞語尾 -ly から成り、direct はラテン語 dirigere「まっすぐ導く」にさかのぼる。direction や redirect も同根で、一直線ではなく回り道で届く感じが「間接的に」を作る。
