An inpatient is a patient who stays in a hospital or medical facility for treatment. This word is used in healthcare and hospital settings. It is different from an outpatient, who receives treatment without staying overnight.

patient はまず『患者』として押さえ、そこに in が付くと『中にいる患者』と考えると定着しやすいです。病院の建物の中に泊まり込みで治療を受ける人、という場面を思い浮かべると意味がぶれません。対義語の outpatient は『外来患者』なので、in / out の対比でセット暗記すると強いです。つづりが似た impatient（短気な）とは別語なので、patient を見たらまず医療文脈を確認すると混同しにくくなります。
