ラテン語inserere（in-「中に」＋serere「つなぐ、植える」）が語源。「中に差し込む」が原義で、現在分詞形-ingが付いた形。serereからはseries（連続）やdesert（見捨てる＝つながりを断つ）も派生しており、「何かの間に組み込む」という意味の成り立ちがわかる。
