inter-「相互に」と change「変える・交換する」から、車が道路を切り替える地点を連想しましょう。interchange に -s を付けた複数形で、末尾は /ɪz/ と発音します。
Connect inter- with “between or mutually” and change with switching routes. Picture several places where drivers change roads. Add -s to interchange for the plural; the ending is pronounced /ɪz/.

interchanges の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古フランス語 entrechangier から。inter-(相互に)+ change(交換する、ラテン語 cambiare)が語根で「互いに入れ替える」が原義。道路が相互に接続する立体交差の意味に拡張された。関連語: exchange(交換)、change(変化)。
Interchanges is the plural of interchange. The word entered English through forms related to Old French entrechangier and is built conceptually from inter-, expressing mutuality or position between, and change. Its earliest senses concerned reciprocal exchange or alternation. The noun later developed a transportation sense for a place where passengers, vehicles, or traffic can transfer between routes. In modern road terminology, an interchange commonly means a grade-separated junction with connecting ramps, especially on highways.
