intercom の語源・成り立ち Etymology
intercom は intercommunication の短縮形で、inter-「間で」+ communication「伝達」からできています。communication はラテン語 communicare「共有する」に由来し、「離れた場所どうしで声をやり取りする装置」からインターホンの意になりました。関連語は interact, communicate。
Intercom is a twentieth-century shortening of intercommunication or intercommunication system. The prefix inter- means “between” or “among,” while communication ultimately derives from Latin communicare, “to share or make common.” The shortened form became the ordinary name for equipment that transmits speech between rooms, entrances, departments, or other nearby locations. Its structure therefore preserves the central idea of communication between separate points.
