ヘブライ語 Yeshua（יֵשׁוּעַ）が語源で「ヤハウェは救い」を意味する。ギリシャ語で Iēsous（Ἰησοῦς）に転写され、ラテン語 Iesus を経て英語 Jesus となった。旧約聖書の Joshua（ヨシュア）と同根で、どちらも「神が救う」という意味を持つ。
