The seventh month of the year, following June and preceding August. It has thirty-one days and falls in summer in the Northern Hemisphere and winter in the Southern Hemisphere.

ラテン語 Julius（ユリウス）に由来。古代ローマの政治家ユリウス・カエサル（Julius Caesar）の名にちなみ改名された月。Julius はローマ神話のユピテル（Jupiter）と同根とされる。関連語: Julian（ユリウス暦の）。
July comes through Old English and Old French from Latin Julius. The Roman month was renamed in honor of Julius Caesar, who was born during that month; it had previously been called Quintilis, reflecting its earlier position as the fifth month in the old Roman calendar. Julius was a Roman family name. A deeper connection between that name and Jupiter has been proposed, but it is not certain.
