kier の語源・成り立ち Etymology
kier は古ノルド語 ker「桶・槽」にさかのぼり、英語では布を漂白する大きな桶を指すようになりました。分解するなら語幹 ker が核で、アイスランド語 ker やスウェーデン語 kar と比べると、「布晒し桶」がまず器の名から来たと腑に落ちます。
Kier comes from Old Norse ker, meaning "tub" or "vat," and is related to similar Scandinavian words such as Icelandic ker and Swedish kar. The basic idea was simply a container. In English, the meaning became more specialized and came to refer to a large vat used especially in bleaching cloth.
