Etymology
Klondike takes its English form from the name of the Klondike River in present-day Yukon, Canada. That name is an adaptation of the Hän expression Tr’ondëk, commonly explained with reference to hammerstones or the driving of stakes in connection with traditional salmon fishing at the river. The English spelling arose through settlers’ attempts to reproduce the Indigenous name. Discoveries of gold beginning in 1896 made Klondike internationally associated with the subsequent gold rush.
