A tamale is a traditional food made from corn dough and usually filled with meat, cheese, or vegetables. It is wrapped in a corn husk or banana leaf and then steamed. The word is commonly used in Mexican and Latin American food contexts.

メキシコ料理名として taco、burrito、tortilla と同じグループでまとめて覚えると残りやすい。その中で tamale は「皮で巻く料理」ではなく、corn dough（トウモロコシ生地）で具を包み、さらに葉で巻いて蒸す料理。記憶の核は “Mexican steamed corn parcel”。英語では tuh-MAH-lee に近い発音で、male とは無関係。複数形 tamales も料理名としてよく見かける。

tamale の語源・成り立ち Etymology
tamale はメキシコ系スペイン語 tamal を経て、ナワトル語 tamalli『包んだ食べ物』にさかのぼる。接頭辞分解はないが、葉で包んだ生地という原義がそのまま料理名になっており、tamal、tamales も同根。
Tamale came into English through Mexican Spanish tamal, from Nahuatl tamalli. The original word referred to a wrapped food, matching the way the dish is prepared. The meaning changed very little as it moved between languages. Related forms are tamal and tamales.
