knesset の語源・成り立ち Etymology
knessetはヘブライ語kneset/keneseth「集会・会議」に由来し、語根k-n-sは「集める・招集する」を表します。語の芯が「人を集めた場」なので、現代ではイスラエル議会名となり、関連表記にkeneseth, beth-kenesethがあります。
Knesset is borrowed from Modern Hebrew kneset, meaning “assembly” or “gathering.” It belongs to the Hebrew root k-n-s, associated with gathering, assembling, or bringing together. The same noun occurs in the traditional expression Knesset HaGedolah, “the Great Assembly.” When adopted as the official name of Israel’s parliament, the word retained its central sense of an assembled body. In English it is normally capitalized and preceded by the because it denotes a particular national institution.
