A Kurd is a member of an ethnic group native mainly to adjoining regions of Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria. Kurds share cultural and linguistic traditions, although their communities are spread across several countries.

English Kurd entered through Middle Eastern forms of the ethnic name, including Persian and related regional usage. Its deeper origin is uncertain. A connection has sometimes been proposed with Sumerian kur, “mountain” or “foreign land,” reflecting the mountainous regions associated with Kurdish communities, but this is not securely established as the direct source. Kurdistan combines Kurd with the Persian suffix -stan, meaning “place” or “land.”
