lady は古英語 hlæfdige にさかのぼり、hlaf「パン」+ dige「こねる人」が原形、-ship は「身分・状態」です。lordship や friendship の -ship と同じで、『家を預かる女性の地位』から敬称や淑女らしさの意味が育ちました。
Ladyship joins lady and the suffix -ship, which shows a state, condition, or rank.
