Lambasting is the -ing form of lambaste. The word seems to have grown from baste, an old verb meaning "to beat," mixed with lam, an informal word meaning "to hit." Because both parts carry the idea of striking, the word became very forceful and later developed the figurative sense of "scolding or criticizing harshly."
