Skewering comes from skewer + -ing. Skewer came into English through Middle English and Old French forms, probably from a Germanic or Norse source connected with something thin, sharp, or cutting. It first referred to piercing with a long pointed tool, and later gained a figurative sense for harsh verbal attack. The image of sharply sticking through something stayed the same.
