主に主張・言い訳・値段・成績などが、まともに取り合えないほどひどく、あきれて笑ってしまうようなときに使う。面白くて笑えるというより、程度の低さや不合理さを強く非難する語。批判や軽蔑をにじませる場面でよく用いられる。
So unreasonable or poor that it deserves ridicule rather than serious consideration. It usually expresses criticism or contempt, not genuine amusement.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
laugh を知っていれば核はすぐつかめる。-able は readable, drinkable などと同じで『〜できる』だから、直感は『笑えてしまう』。ただし funny のような純粋に楽しい面白さではなく、『ばかばかしくて笑うしかない』という見下しやあきれがにじむ語。ridiculous に近いが、laughable は“笑いが出るほどひどい”感じが強い。a laughable excuse / claim / idea の形で、言い訳や主張が相手にされない場面と結びつけて覚えると残りやすい。
Combine laugh with -able to get the basic image of something that makes you laugh. Here, however, the laughter comes from disbelief or scorn, as with a laughable excuse or claim, rather than from something pleasantly funny.
