cranky は古英語 crancstæf「曲がった杖」に通じる crank からできた語で、核にあるのは「まっすぐでなくねじれた」という感覚。crank や crankshaft と同根で、物の曲がりがそのまま性格や機嫌のひねくれへ移り、「気難しい」を表すようになった。
