解説 Definition
人や動物の口の上下にある柔らかい部分を指すのが基本義で、話したり食べたりするときに使われる。そこから転じて、カップや崖、火口などの物の端にある突き出した縁を表すこともある。
A lip is one of the soft outer parts around the mouth. The word can also mean the edge of an opening, container, or surface. This second meaning is common in descriptions of physical objects and shapes.

古英語 lippa に由来し、ゲルマン祖語 *lepô-（唇）から。ラテン語 labium（唇）とも印欧祖語で同根とされる。関連語：labial（唇音の）。容器や崖の「縁・へり」の意味は、唇が口の縁であることからの比喩的拡張。
From Old English lippa, from a Germanic root meaning "lip." It is probably related at a deeper Indo-European level to Latin labium, seen in English labial. The basic meaning stayed the same for the body part. Later it was also used for the edge of things, like a cup or cliff, by comparison with the lip as the rim of the mouth.
