解説 Definition
liqueur は、果物やハーブ、香料などで風味をつけた甘いアルコール飲料という意味です。日本語の「リキュール」とほぼ同じですが、英語では酒の種類そのものを指し、カクテル全般を意味するわけではありません。
A liqueur is a usually sweet alcoholic drink flavored with ingredients such as fruit, herbs, spices, nuts, or cream. It may be served by itself, added to desserts or coffee, or used as one ingredient in a cocktail.

フランス語を経て、ラテン語で「流れる」を意味する*liquere*が語源です。もとは蒸留された「液体」全般を指しましたが、後に風味と甘みを加えた酒を指す言葉となりました。同じ*liqu-*語根の「liquid（液体）」や「liquefy（液化する）」と同根です。
Liqueur entered English from French liqueur, a word historically referring to liquid and connected through Latin liquor, “fluidity or liquid,” with liquēre, “to be fluid.” The same Latin family underlies English liquid and liquefy. As distillation and flavored alcoholic preparations developed in Europe, the French word acquired its specialized sense of a sweetened, flavored spirit. English retained the French-influenced spelling to name this particular category of alcoholic drink.
