「lots」とは「たくさん」「多数」を意味する表現で、数えられるものにも数えられないものにも使うことができる非公式な表現である。日常会話で非常によく使われ、「a lot of」と同じ意味合いを持つ。

古英語 hlot（くじ、分け前）に由来し、「くじで決める割り当て分」→「多くの量」へと意味が拡大した。lot は元々「運命・くじ引き」を意味し、lottery（宝くじ）も同語根。「くじで分けるほどたくさんある」と覚えると意味のつながりがわかる。
Lots is the plural form of lot, with -s pronounced /s/ after the voiceless final /t/. Lot comes from Old English hlot, referring to an object used in drawing lots and then to the share or portion assigned by such a process. From the idea of a portion, the noun developed broader quantity senses. The informal expression lots of eventually came to mean “a large number or amount of,” for both countable and uncountable nouns.
