macaw はポルトガル語 macau を経た語で、さらにブラジル先住民語トゥピ語系の鳥名にさかのぼるとされます。scarlet macaw や hyacinth macaw に同じ語が残り、南米の土地の呼び名がそのまま英語の種名になったと見ると記憶に残ります。
`Macaw` came through Portuguese `macau` and is thought to go back to a bird name in a Brazilian Indigenous language, probably from the Tupi family. English seems to have borrowed the local name rather than creating a new one. That is why the same root appears across bird names such as `scarlet macaw`.
