本管ほんかん、幹線かんせん

解説 Definition

mains は、水・ガス・電気などを建物や小さな支線へ供給する主要な管や幹線を指す、main の複数形です。英国英語では、the mains が公共の電力網から供給される電源を指すこともあります。

Mains are the principal pipes or lines through which water, gas, or electricity is distributed to buildings and smaller local connections. In British English, the mains can also mean the public electricity supply, as opposed to power from a battery or generator.

使い方 Usage

  • water mains(水道本管)、gas mains(ガス本管)のように、供給するものを前に置きます。 Put the substance supplied before mains, as in water mains and gas mains.
  • 英国英語の the mains や mains electricity は、電池や発電機ではなく公共の電力網から供給される電源を指します。 In British English, the mains and mains electricity refer to the public electricity supply, rather than power from a battery or generator.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

main「主要な、本管」に複数語尾 -s を付けた形です。大きな本管から小さな管へ供給が分かれる様子を思い浮かべましょう。語末の -s は /z/ で、全体は /meɪnz/ と発音します。

Picture a large main pipe feeding smaller pipes. Mains is the plural of main in this sense. Its final -s is pronounced /z/ after the voiced /n/, giving /meɪnz/.

例文

The workers shut off the water mains to repair the broken pipe.

作業員たちは壊れた管を修理するために、水道本管の水を止めました。

The power cut was caused by a fault in the mains supply.

その停電は、電力の供給系統の不具合によって起きました。

mains の語源・成り立ち Etymology

mains は main の複数形で、the mains で『主電源・本線』を表す。main は古英語 mægen『力・強さ』に由来し、そこから『主要なもの』、さらに18世紀に『主要な管・幹線』の意味へ広がった。『いちばん大きい流れ』が電気の元口を指すわけ。関連語は mainline、mainland。

Mains is the plural form of main. Main ultimately comes from Old English mægen, meaning “strength, power, or force,” and later developed the sense “principal” or “most important.” From this meaning arose the noun main for a principal pipe, cable, or distribution line. The plural mains consequently refers to major utility lines, while British English the mains developed as a collective expression for the public electricity or utility supply.
