mannitol は manna＋-itol。manna は後期ラテン語・ギリシャ語を経て聖書の「マナ」にさかのぼり、-itol は糖アルコール名によく付く語尾で、mannose も同じ manna 系です。『マナから得た甘いアルコール状物質』と見ると、天然由来の糖の仲間だと腑に落ちます。
Mannitol comes from manna and the chemical suffix -itol. Manna goes back through Late Latin and Greek to the biblical word for the sweet substance called manna, and -itol is often used in the names of sugar alcohols. The word originally suggested a sweet alcohol-like substance obtained from manna, and later became the scientific name for this compound. Mannose is from the same manna source.
