marksmanship の語源・成り立ち Etymology
marksmanship は mark「的・しるし」+ man + -ship「技能」からなり、mark は古英語 mearc「境界印」に由来する。つまり「印を見失わず当てる技」で、landmark や earmark も同根なので、射撃術の核が「目印を正確に捉えること」だとわかる。
Marksmanship is built from mark, man, and -ship. Mark comes from Old English mearc, meaning a boundary sign or visible marker. The word originally centered on keeping your eye on a clear target, and from that it came to mean skill in hitting it accurately.
