Matrilineal describes a system in which family line, inheritance, or identity is passed through the mother's side. It is often used in anthropology, history, and discussions of culture. Usage note: it refers to family descent, not necessarily social or political power.

matri- は maternal や matriarchy にある「母」、-lineal は line / lineage の「家系の線」と結びつけると覚えやすいです。つまり『母のラインでたどる』で母系の。対になる patrilineal（父系の）とセットで置くと定着します。人類学では descent, inheritance, kinship と一緒に出やすく、血統・財産・所属を誰の系統で受け継ぐかを示す語です。matriarchal は『女性が支配する』側の語で、matrilineal はあくまで系統のたどり方を言う点を区別すると混同しにくくなります。
