古代ギリシャ語の「melas（黒い）」に接尾辞「-in」を組み合わせた語です。名前の通り黒っぽい色素を指すため、肌や髪を暗くする物質という意味に納得できます。同語根の関連語には、皮膚がんの一種であるmelanomaや、黒胆汁に由来するmelancholy（憂鬱）があります。
Melanin was formed from Greek melas, with the stem melan-, meaning “black” or “dark,” plus the substance-forming suffix -in. Its name therefore reflects the dark appearance of important forms of the pigment. The same Greek stem occurs in melanoma and melanocyte. Melancholy is a more distant relative: it ultimately referred to “black bile” in ancient medical theory, though its modern meaning no longer concerns pigment.
