礼儀正しさや道徳性、きちんとした生活態度があると周囲から認められて得られる、よい評判や社会的信用のこと。単なる見栄ではなく、社会の中で「まともで信頼できる人・家柄・組織だ」と見なされる状態を表す。
Respectability is the quality of being seen by society as proper, honest, and acceptable. It is often used when talking about social status, behavior, or public image. The word can sometimes suggest following conventional standards in order to gain approval.

respectability の respect はラテン語 respicere「振り返って見る」、-ability は「〜できる性質」です。つまり「見ても評価に耐えること」から、世間に恥ずかしくない体面という意味へ育ちました。respect、inspection も spec「見る」を含みます。
Respectability is built from respect and the noun ending -ability. Respect comes from Latin respicere, "to look back at" or "look at carefully," from the same root seen in inspect and spectator.
