古英語の王国名Mercia（マーシア）に由来し、「辺境の人々」を意味するmierce（境界）から派生。ゲルマン祖語*markō（境界）が語源で、英語のmark（印）やmarch（辺境）と同根。アングロサクソン七王国の一つで、中部イングランドの境界地域を指した。
Mercian is formed from Mercia with the adjectival and personal suffix -an. Mercia’s Old English name was connected with the Mierce, “the border people,” a designation related to a Germanic word for a boundary or borderland. Cognates or historically related forms include march in its sense of “frontier” and mark in older boundary-related senses. The kingdom occupied much of what is now central England.
