Etymology
The river name Meuse came into English through French and continues Latin Mosa, an ancient name for the river. It is commonly connected with an older Celtic river name, although the precise prehistoric meaning cannot be established with complete certainty. Dutch uses the related form Maas. That form is also preserved in Maastricht, historically a settlement associated with a crossing of the Maas. The different modern names refer to the same river system.
