メキシコ産の蒸留酒で、主にアガベから作られます。テキーラと近い仲間ですが、スモーキーで土っぽく、複雑な風味をもつものが多いです。

mezcal の語源・成り立ち Etymology
mezcal はナワトル語 mexcalli にさかのぼり、metl「アガベ」+ ixcalli「焼いたもの」で「焼いたアガベ酒」が原義です。mescal は同語源の別綴りで、原料よりも製法が名の中心だと分かると酒の個性まで見えてきます。
Mezcal comes from Nahuatl mexcalli, from metl "agave" and ixcalli "something cooked or roasted." The name originally referred to agave prepared by roasting, and later became the name of the drink made from it. Mescal is a variant spelling from the same source.
