植物の属名 Agave は、リンネがギリシャ神話の女性名 Agauē にちなみ用いたものです。この名はギリシャ語 agauos（高貴な、輝かしい）に関連するとされます。一部のリュウゼツランは長い年月を経て開花することで知られますが、それが命名の直接の理由だったとは断定できません。
The botanical name Agave was established by Carl Linnaeus in the eighteenth century. He took it from Greek Agauē, the name of a woman in Greek mythology, related to the adjective agauos, meaning illustrious, noble, or admirable. The elevated name suited the plant’s striking appearance. Claims that it was selected specifically because some agaves flower only after many years are plausible associations, but they are not a certain part of the word’s formation.
