ギリシャ神話の女神Agaue（アガウェー）に由来し、ギリシャ語agauos（高貴な、輝かしい）が語源。植物学者リンネが命名した。この植物は数十年に一度しか開花しないため、神話的な名が与えられた。関連語にagast（驚嘆した）がある。
The botanical name Agave was established by Carl Linnaeus in the eighteenth century. He took it from Greek Agauē, the name of a woman in Greek mythology, related to the adjective agauos, meaning illustrious, noble, or admirable. The elevated name suited the plant’s striking appearance. Claims that it was selected specifically because some agaves flower only after many years are plausible associations, but they are not a certain part of the word’s formation.
