microbiome の語源・成り立ち Etymology
microbiome はギリシャ語由来の micro-「小さい」+ bio-「生命」+ -ome「全体・系」からできた現代語です。だから単なる微生物1個ではなく、体内や土壌にいる『微小な生き物のまとまり全体』を指します。関連語は microbe, biology。
Microbiome is a modern scientific formation built from micro-, ultimately from Greek mikros, “small,” bio-, from Greek bios, “life,” and the collective suffix -ome. The suffix is used in scientific terms for a complete set or system, as in genome. The word therefore presents the microorganisms associated with an environment as a connected whole rather than as isolated organisms.
