mien は16世紀英語で、古い動詞 demean（身のこなしを示す）から短縮・変形して生まれ、背後にはアングロ＝フランス語 demener「導く・ふるまう」があります。関連語は demeanor, demean。外に表れるふるまいがそのまま「態度・物腰」になった語です。
Mien entered English in the 16th century as a shortened and altered form linked to demean, in its older sense of "to conduct oneself."
