Mimicry is the act or ability of copying the appearance, behavior, or sound of something else. It is often used in biology for animals or plants that resemble another species to survive, but it can also describe imitation in a more general sense.

mimicry はまず動詞 mimic「まねする」を知っていると覚えやすいです。mimic + -ry で「まねしている状態・性質」という形。人のしぐさをまねる文脈にも使えますが、英単語帳では特に生物の「擬態」でよく出ます。つまり「ただ似ている」のではなく、敵をごまかすために別の生き物や周囲に似せる感じ。imitation は一般的な模倣、camouflage は背景に溶け込む偽装で、mimicry は『何か別のものに見せる』点を意識すると定着しやすいです。

mimicはギリシャ語 mimikos「ものまねの」、さらに mimos「物まね役者」に由来し、-ryは行為や性質を表す。もとは「まねすること」で、生物学では他の生物に似せて身を守る現象、つまり擬態を指すようになった。関連語に mime, mimetic がある。
Mimicry comes from mimic, which goes back to Greek mimikos, meaning "imitative," and mimos, meaning an actor or imitator. The ending -ry adds the sense of a practice or condition. It first meant the act of copying or imitating. In biology, it later became the name for the way one living thing copies another in order to survive or avoid danger.
