camouflage はフランス語 camoufler「見えないように装う」から入り、さらにイタリア語 camuffare にさかのぼる語です。語源には『頭を包む』説があり、元のイメージは姿を覆って別物に見せることなので、『迷彩』の意味にぴったりです。関連語は muffle、camo。
Camouflage came from French camoufler, meaning to disguise or make hard to see, probably through Italian camuffare. The earlier idea seems to have been covering or masking something so it looked different. That image of hiding by changing appearance led naturally to the modern military sense.
