人や生き物が自分の姿・外見・形態を別のものへ変えること、またはその超自然的な能力を指す語。神話や民間伝承、ファンタジー作品では、人間が動物や他人の姿に変身する力としてよく描かれる。
Shapeshifting is the act or ability of changing form or appearance into something else. It is most common in fantasy, mythology, and science fiction. The word can also be used more loosely for anything that seems to change identity or form easily.

shape「形」と shift「切り替える・移す」が見えれば、'形を切り替えること' と考えると覚えやすいです。shift は gear shift や night shift にあるように『状態が切り替わる』感覚の語なので、見た目を少し変えるだけでなく、別の姿へ移るイメージ。-ing が付くので『変身する行為・能力』を表し、disguise（変装）と違って実際に姿そのものが変わる点に注意。fantasy では a shapeshifting creature の形でよく出ます。
