きつく結ばれたものや締め付けられた部分の力を弱くして、状態をゆるやかにすることです。タイトな状態を調整して楽な状態に戻し、必要に応じて動きやすさを取り戻すことも意味します。圧力や緊張をほどく動作全般を指すことが多いです。

loosen は古ノルド語由来の loose「自由な、ほどけた」に、動詞化の -en が付いた語です。loose + -en で文字通り「ゆるい状態にする」を表し、unloose や looseness も同根。「締め付けから解く」感覚がそのまま「緩める」です。
Loosen was formed from the adjective loose plus the verb-forming suffix -en. Loose came into English from Old Norse, where it meant "free" or "unfastened." So loosen first meant "to make loose," and that basic idea later developed into "to relax" or "to release."
