modal は mode「様式・様相」に接尾辞 -al が付いた語で、mode はフランス語を経てラテン語 modus「測り方・型」に由来します。つまり「あり方や型に関する」が原義で、文法では助動詞の機能名にもなりました。関連語に mode、modify があります。
