魚名の molly は、かつて用いられた新ラテン語の属名 Mollienesia の短縮形。この属名はフランスの政治家ニコラ・フランソワ・モリアン伯爵（Count Mollien）にちなんでいる。女性名 Molly（Mary の愛称）とは別の由来。
The fish name molly is generally understood as a shortening of Mollienesia, a former genus name used for these live-bearing fishes. Mollienesia was named in honor of the French statesman Nicolas François, Count Mollien. Although Molly is also independently used as a familiar form of the personal name Mary, that personal-name history does not explain the aquarium-fish sense used here.
