覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
moon(月)と raker(熊手などでかく人)に分け、池に映る月を熊手で取ろうとするウィルトシャーの伝承を思い浮かべる。作品名 Moonraker では、宇宙計画をめぐるジェームズ・ボンド映画を指す。通常の moon と rake の合成語として形を覚えやすい。
Split Moonraker into moon and raker: literally, someone trying to rake the moon. A Wiltshire legend tells of people raking a pond where the moon was reflected, a vivid image that makes the compound easy to retain. For the title Moonraker, connect that moon image with the James Bond adventure’s space shuttles, orbital setting, and highly fantastical plot. The ordinary noun rake supplies raker, “one who rakes,” while the capitalized form identifies the work. This also prevents confusion with unrelated words such as moonwalker.

moonraker の語源・成り立ち Etymology
moon(月)+raker(熊手で掻く人)の合成語。英国ウィルトシャーの民話で、池に映った月を熊手で取ろうとした愚か者の逸話に由来。rakeは古英語racaから。007シリーズやスペースシャトルの名称としても知られる。
Moonraker is formed transparently from moon and raker, “a person who rakes.” It is associated with a Wiltshire folk story in which people appeared to be raking the moon’s reflection from a pond; the tale gave Wiltshire residents the nickname Moonrakers. Ian Fleming later used Moonraker as the title of a James Bond novel, and the title was retained for the film adaptation, whose plot placed greater emphasis on space travel.
