multiplexing の multi- はラテン語 multus「多くの」、-plex は plicare「折る」に由来します。もともと『多く折り重なった』イメージで、複数の信号を一つに畳み込む感覚が多重化に直結します。duplex や complex も同系です。
Multiplexing comes from multiplex, built from Latin multi-, meaning "many," and a second part from plicare, meaning "to fold." The same root appears in duplex and complex. The idea moved from something folded into many parts to the technical sense of combining several streams into one system.
