my は一人称単数代名詞 I に対応する所有を示す語で、古英語 mīn「私の」に由来します。もとは mine と同じ語でしたが、中英語以降、名詞の前では my、名詞を伴わず単独で使うときは mine という使い分けが定着しました。
My developed from Old English mīn, a possessive form of the first-person singular pronoun. It was originally the same form that later became modern mine. During Middle English, shorter my became established before a following noun, while mine remained available when no noun followed. This historical split produced the modern contrast between my book and The book is mine. The word belongs to the same basic pronoun set as I, me, and myself.
