「nay」は、「いや」「それどころか」という意味を持つ古風または文語的な表現で、前の発言を否定したり、より強い表現に言い換える際に使われる副詞・接続詞です。また、投票などにおける「反対」の意思表示としても用いられます。「yes」に対する「no」の格式ある言い方でもあります。

中英語の nay は古ノルド語 nei に由来し、ne「〜でない」+ ei「いつまでも」から成る否定語です。もとは返答の「いいえ」で、yea or nay の形では賛否そのものを表し、no や naysay と近い仲間です。『決してそうではない』という響きが核にあります。
Middle English nay was borrowed from Old Norse nei, a negative response formed historically from elements meaning “not” and “ever.” Its earliest core was an emphatic “no” or “never,” and it later became a noun for a negative vote. The contrastive formula yea or nay preserves the older pair of affirmative and negative answers, while naysay retains the same negative element.
