Memory Tip
「比べる対象の中で最も近い」ため、the nearest station、the nearest exit のように通常 the を伴う。
Nearest is formed by adding the superlative ending -est to near: near, nearer, nearest. It identifies the one with the shortest distance among several possibilities, so it commonly appears with the, as in the nearest station, the nearest hospital, or the nearest exit. Picture asking for a facility and selecting the closest available one. Do not confuse nearest with nearer: nearer compares two distances or indicates a smaller distance, while nearest marks the minimum distance within the relevant group.

Etymology
関連語: near(近い)、neighbor(隣人、nēah + gebūr=近くの住人)。
Nearest is the modern superlative form associated with near. Near comes from Old English nēar, historically a comparative form related to nēah, “close,” while the old superlative nīehst also contributed to later forms. English eventually regularized the pattern as near, nearer, nearest by using the familiar endings -er and -est. The adjective now commonly identifies the closest location or object among the available alternatives.
