neem の語源・成り立ち Etymology
neem はインド起源の植物名がそのまま英語に入った語で、ヒンディー語・ウルドゥー語 nīm、さらにサンスクリット語 nimba に由来します。分解より借用が中心で、「その土地の木だから名前ごと入った」と考えると覚えやすい語です。関連語は nim, neem oil。
Neem came into English as a borrowing from South Asia, through Hindi and Urdu nīm. That form goes back to Sanskrit nimba, the older name of the tree. The word was borrowed with the plant itself, which is why English kept a form close to the local name, as in neem oil.
