The word nicotine was formed from New Latin Nicotiana, the botanical genus containing the tobacco plant, with the chemical suffix -ine. Nicotiana was named for Jean Nicot, a sixteenth-century French diplomat who helped introduce tobacco to the French court. When the alkaloid was isolated and named in the nineteenth century, the plant name supplied its scientific designation. The word is therefore ultimately an eponym based on a person’s surname.
