解説 Definition

nights は night(夜)の複数形です。何日かの夜や、夜の時間帯が何度もあることを表すときに使います。

The plural of night, referring to two or more periods of darkness between evening and morning. It can also count overnight stays, as in staying somewhere for three nights.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

night「夜」の規則的な複数形で、-s を付けて nights、発音は /naɪts/。gh は発音せず、語尾は /ts/ と続く。three nights なら「3泊」、cold nights や summer nights なら複数回の夜を指す。一晩だけの tonight や、毎晩を表す at night と使い分ける。

Nights is the regular plural of night: add -s and pronounce it /naɪts/. The letters gh remain silent, and the final consonants sound like /ts/. Use nights for repeated nighttime periods, as in cold nights or summer nights, and to count overnight stays, as in three nights at a hotel. Picture several calendar days with each dark section marked to reinforce the plural idea. Compare at night, which often describes a general habit, with for three nights, which counts separate nights.

nights の語源・成り立ち Etymology

古英語 niht(ゲルマン祖語 *nahtiz)に由来し、印欧祖語 *nókʷts(夜)が起源。ラテン語 nox、ギリシャ語 nyx も同根で、nocturnal(夜行性の)や equinox(昼夜平分時)と関連する。光のない暗い時間帯という原義がそのまま現代に受け継がれている。

Nights is the plural of night. Night comes from Old English niht, from a Germanic ancestor commonly reconstructed as naht-. It is ultimately related to an Indo-European word for night, also represented by Latin nox and Greek nyx. English words such as nocturnal preserve the related Latin form. The silent gh reflects historical sounds and spelling changes, while the added -s marks the modern plural.
